I UNDERSTAND THAT THE BICYCLING PORTION OF THE EVENT WILL INCLUDE TWO WAY TRAFFIC ON A PAVED RAIL TRAIL. AT NO TIME WILL I PASS, OR ATTEMPT TO PASS ANOTHER RIDER WHEN THERE IS AN ON-COMING CYCLIST. I WILL ALSO ABIDE BY THE SHORT NO-PASSING ZONES.

Congratulations on your registration to participate in the WVU Hospitals Sprint, Splash 'n Spin triathlon. Start times for this race have been assigned on a first come, first served basis. Start times will be posted on the web after Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at www.sprintsplashspin.com/starts/ and printed in The Dominion Post.
By participating in this event you are helping to raise money for Habitat for Humanity of Monongalia County. You're also helping to achieve our mission of creating a fun community event that highlights Morgantown's superb recreational facilities and encourages people to exercise. To insure a fun and safe race, please read and carefully follow the rules below. The rules are designed to insure a fair and safe race. Violation of the rules could result in disqualification and could cause harm to you or others. We'd like to make this race a Morgantown tradition, so please - participate safely by knowing and following the rules.
Plan to arrive one hour before your assigned start time. This allows ample time to park your car, check in, get your equipment set up and be ready for your start time. Because of the nature of a staggered start race, if you miss you're start time even by a minute, you may not be able to race. Please be prepared.
After parking in the pavilion lot or ball field parking lots above Marilla Center, walk your bicycle to the registration desk located in the Marilla Center. You will be given another copy of these rules, a shirt, a chip ankle tag, a heat number, and a starting time. Also, at that time, your number will be marked on your body.
Your ankle chip must remain on your ankle throughout the race, and must be returned to the appropriate table in Marilla Center, immediately upon completion of your race. Failure to return the tag will result in an additional $30 fee applied to you. While wearing your tag prior to the race, avoid the timing pads located at the pool exit and the bike and run start. Getting too near a timing pad will set off your chip and your timing will be inaccurate.
Place your bicycle in the transition area (the parking lot in front of Marilla pool) at the designated stall assigned to you. Your bike stall number will be the same as the one on your chip and body. Also, place your shoes and clothing at the bike stall. For the protection of your bike and clothing - as well as your safety - ONLY COMPETITORS ARE ALLOWED IN THE TRANSITION AREA.
After setting up your transition area, enter the pool via the locker rooms. You must check in at the pool check-in desk 15 minutes prior to your assigned heat time. Competitors will start in the pool (no dive-ins) in groups of ten, two people per lane. Stay in your side of the lane that you are assigned throughout your swim so that you do not collide with the other person in your lane. Swim ten lengths. Flotation devices are not allowed in the pool.
Since a new set of swimmers will be set to start every ten minutes, you must finish your ten lengths within 9.5 minutes. If you are not finished at that time, you will be required to get out of the pool with a "penalty" of one minute for each length (or partial length) not completed.
Shoes and clothing are not permitted on the deck area, but you may place them to the left of the exit gate from the pool near the concession stand, or leave them at your bike stall. If you choose to leave them inside the pool area, please keep them clear of the exit path. Swimmers will exit the pool and go through the gate near the concession stand to proceed to their bike stalls. Change into your clothing at the bike stall.
YOU MUST WEAR AN AMSI BELL APPROVED HELMET.
To begin the bike route, run or walk your bike out of the transition area to the start of Marilla Park route (just after foot bridge). DO NOT RIDE YOUR BIKE OUT OF OR INTO THE TRANSITION AREA!!!! Once you are outside the transition area, mount your bikes at the dismount line on Marilla Park road. Stay to the right throughout the race, as there will be two-way bicycle traffic for the entire race. Do not cut corners on turns.
BECAUSE THE BICYCLE PORTION OF THE RACE IS ON THE PAVED RAIL TRAIL, CERTAIN RESTRICTIONS APPLY. THERE WILL BE A SECTION MARKED "NO PASSING ZONE" DUE TO SEVERAL POSTS IN THE CENTER OF THE TRAIL. THERE IS A STRICT "NO THREE RIDERS ABREAST RULE". THEREFORE, IF YOU SEE A RIDER COMING TOWARDS YOU WHEN YOU WANT TO PASS SOMEONE, YOU MUST WAIT UNTIL THE RIDER PASSES YOU AND THERE IS A CLEARING UNTIL YOU PASS. NOT ADHERING TO THESE RULES RESULTS IN IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION AND REMOVAL FROM THE RACE. The turn around point for the bicycle race is in the parking lot in front of March Westin. There is ample room to remain on your bike for the turn, but THE TURN MUST BE TAKEN SLOWLY AND WITH CAUTION. THERE IS NO PASSING AT THE BIKE TURN AROUND.
You are asked to use good judgment in bicycling at a safe speed and distance from other riders. Do not bike too close to another cyclist. NO DRAFTING. Spacing between you and the next bike ahead of you should be at least three full bicycle lengths. THINK SAFETY. Be alert to kids and cars.
Persons with orange vests and flags will be at intersections to hold back traffic for you. Persons also will be on the route to warn you of dangerous and no-passing zones, and the bike turn around ahead. You will finish the 11-mile bicycling route at the end of Marilla Park road. DISMOUNT BICYCLES BEFORE PROCEEDING TO THE TRANSITION AREA. Walk or run your bike back to the same assigned stall where you picked it up. You must do this - not a helper.
To begin the running route, run on the designated side of the right lane of Marilla Park road. The road will be closed to traffic and coned off between lanes to separate the running lane from the biking lane. Persons with orange vests will be at Earl Core road to help you cross from Decker's Creek Bridge into the DMV lot. Volunteers and cones will mark the way from the DMV lot onto the paved rail trail. You will run on the trail in the opposite direction that you biked (towards Masontown). Police vehicles and volunteers will be at the intersection of the trail behind Southern States. It is still important to personally be aware of traffic and cross the intersection with CAUTION! Water will be provided for you at the start of the run and at the turn around point, which will be near the I-68 bridge. The run will be 5 kilometers.
RELAY TEAMS will begin when all individual competitors have completed the swim. A relay in a triathlon consists of one person swimming, a second person cycling, and a third person running. In addition, to the above rules, the following rules apply for relays. All exchanges will take place at the bike stall. The swimmer is to run up to the bike stall where the bicyclist must wait before beginning the bike route. The runner must wait at the bike stall until the bicyclist arrives back there and touches him or her.
KID'S RACE will begin immediately following the race orientation on Friday evening, August 22, 2008, at approximately 6:45 p.m.. This race is designed for kids 14 and under. Some kids in this age bracket may be capable of completing the adult course and may do so with a guardian's permission. All kids under 18 must have a guardian present to sign a waiver and remain throughout the duration of the race. The kid's race consists of a 2-length swim (@66 yards), a 1.5-mile bike, and a half-mile run. All kids under 16 will receive a medal, for whichever race they do, adult or kid.
KIDS RACE SWIM POLICY:
We want to make the Kids Race available to as many kids as possible. We are getting many questions about floatation devices and help from parents. After working with the waterfront folks at BOPARC, we have come up with the following policy:
We encourage kids to swim on their own if possible. For kids who can swim, but might have trouble with the length of the swim, they can have limited assistance in these two forms: (1) approved life vests (no inflatables, water wings, inner tubes, noodles, kick boards or other hand held devices). (2) assistance from able swimmers such as parent/guardian. If an assisted situation is deemed to be unsafe to either the kid or helper, the Lifeguards will have final say and the racer can continue on with the bike/run portion of the race.
Please determine in advance and let us know if your child will be using assistance. We will put those kids in the later heats so they are not being run over by or impeding more able swimmers.
If a child wishes to not do the swim at all, they can wait on the pool deck until all swimmers are out of the pool and then head out for the bike/run portion.
If you have an approved PFD and wish to use it, please bring it.
Remember...our goal is for kids and parents to participate and have fun. Please come with that attitude!
AWARDS will be given to overall male and female 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers, male and female winners in each age category (1st, 2nd, 3rd), the 1st place team in each relay category (male, female, mixed, family). Age categories are: under 20; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60 and over. In addition, there will be a physically challenged award, and a medal for each kid participant under 16 completing the race.
At the conclusion of the event, all participants, family members, and volunteers are invited to attend the awards ceremony and family fun day at Marilla Pool. Finish times will be posted on a board, as they are available. Food and drinks will be available inside of the pool area, some of which will be free of charge and some of which will be for purchase. You are invited to enjoy the afternoon at the pool free of cost. Showers are available in the locker rooms.
